Obituary
Cardinal Bafile died Thursday, 3rd February at the age of 101. His passing deprives the Legion of one of its most constant friends. Corrado Bafile was born, the last of 11 children, to a noble family of L'Aquila in the Appenine Mountains, Italy, on 4 July 1903. After secondary school he went to Germany to study biology and chemistry. He came back to Italy and decided to enter a Seminary. He was ordained in 1936. From its first appearance in Rome, the Legion attracted him. He was present at the inaugural meeting of the future Senatus in February 1955 and attended every month. He took part in extension in Rome and in his native province of Abruzzo. In 1958 he was nominated National Spiritual Director by the Italian Hierarchy. Later in 1960 he was appointed Apostolic Nuncio to Germany. The Servant of God Frank Duff attended his consecration as Archbishop. He never ceased to promote the Legion and to offer his support. In 1965 he had the joy of being among those who welcomed Frank Duff as Auditor at the Vatican Council and he attended a meeting of Bishops at which Mr. Duff spoke and he added his glowing testimony to the spirit of the Legion. He was elevated to the rank of Cardinal by Pope Paul V1 in 1976.
As Perfect of the Congregation for the Causes of the Saints, he was more than interested in the legionary candidates and when Frank Duff died he furnished detailed instructions about the inauguration of the process for his beatification.
He remained a port of call for the Concilium Officers whenever they were in Rome and showed his regard for them on all occasions.
The Legion owes an inestimable debt to this distinguished and outstanding servant of Holy Church. May he rest in everlasting peace.
The Annual Acies Function
Extract from the Legion of Mary Handbook
Bearing in mind the importance of devotion to Mary in the Legion system, each year there shall be a consecration of legionaries to Our Lady. The consecration - which shall comprise both an individual and a collective consecration - will take place on the 25th March or on a day close thereto, and will be known as the Acies. This Latin word, meaning as it does an army ranged in battle array, is appropriate to a ceremony in which the legionaries as a body assemble to renew their fealty to Mary, Queen of the Legion, and from her to receive strength and blessing for yet another year's battle with the forces of evil. Moreover, the word is in effective contrast with praesidium, which contemplates the Legion, no longer drawn up in united array, but split up into its various sections, each engaged in its own particular sphere of duty.

The Acies is the great central annual function of the Legion, so that it is necessary to stress the importance of attendance on the part of every member. The essential idea of the Legion, upon which all else is built, is that of working in union with and in dependence on Mary, its Queen. The Acies is the solemn expression of that union and dependence, the renewal - individual and collective - of the legionary declaration of fealty. Hence it is manifest that any legionaries who can attend, and yet fail to do so, have little or none of the spirit of the Legion in them.
