Europe
Gibraltar Curia: Five members joined a team of Spanish peregrini on a project where they visited homes and did crowd contact. They met people of different religions with encouraging results. In addition to other apostolic works, praesidia visit a centre for alcoholics.
Greece
Athens Curia: Reports record the visitation of sick and elderly people. Immigrants and refugees are also visited and Catholics among them are directed to a Catholic centre. Some Orthodox homes are also visited.
Italy
Rome Senatus: The Senatus reports the unexpected and complete conversion of the son of a legionary who had been violently anti-religious, through prayer for the intercession of the Servant of God Frank Duff. Rimini Comitium reports that many legionaries are catechists and Extraodinary Ministers of Holy Communion.
The Concilium paid a warm tribute to Giovanna Turrini for her excellent service as president of the Rome Senatus for 2 periods of 6 years at different periods. She was complimented in particular for her efforts to set up the Legion in the Seminaries in Rome.
Milan Regia: Visitation of praesidia and Councils is carried out regularly. A praesidium of university students attached to Pavia Curia carry out street apostolate, visit dysfunctional and marginalised families and operate a book barrow in the city centre.
Padua Comitium established a new praesidium composed of Nigerians; they also did an Exploratio Dominicalis project.
Malta
Malta Regia:
Gozo Comitium held a Marian function in a seaside resort, with an attendance of 700, including the Bishop. Seventeen intermediate legionaries attended an evening retreat. A Curia, at the request of a parish priest, carried out a week long intensive visitation of an area; it is hoped to set up a praesidium there. Another Curia reports regular contact with Muslim families. Members of a newly established prison praesidium contact other inmates; some of whom on leaving prison expressed a wish to continue membership in outside praesidia.
Albania under the caretakership of Malta Regia
The Regia proposes to send a youth team to Mamurras in August. The parish priest there is Maltese. The project will include a summer school for children in the mornings, youth contact in the afternoon and discussions in the evenings.
Portugal
Lisbon Senatus: The annual Legion pilgrimage to Fatima at the end of October had the usual large number of participants from all over the country. Afterwards some members were invited to speak about the Legion?s programme of evangelisation on national television. A meeting of those engaged in extension in the Lisbon Diocese was held in October and all attached Councils were asked to submit their extension plans to the Senatus, and were reminded of the need to draw up a plan for their Councils for 2005. Coimbra Regia and their attached Councils have made great extension efforts but with only limited success. Porto Regia reported on street apostolate carried out in an area of prostitution and the rehabilitation of one street girl was recorded.
Spain
Madrid Senatus: Great efforts are being made to increase the number of young legionaries. There is a praesidium in the University. An apostolate to many immigrants from all over Latin America consists of helping with accommodation, work and advice on immigration procedures, classes for children and preparation for the Sacraments. An apostolate to street girls also includes the men who frequent the area. The Peregrinatio Pro Christo team from the Senatus to Miami visited homes in Spanish speaking parishes supported by local legionaries.
Barcelona Senatus: This Council will celebrate the Legion?s Golden Jubilee in February 2005. Valencia Curia with sixteen praesidia carry out a variety of works and have two Patrician groups. Extension has been undertaken in the island of Ibiza.
Bilbao Senatus: The Tessera which has been translated into Basque is used for recruiting young people who know the language. Some praesidia are organising Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament for this Year of the Eucharist. Sixteen young people attended a weekend seminar. A street girl who had attempted suicide was reconciled to the Church.
Cyprus
Nicosia Praesidium: Legionaries are involved in a variety of works ? home visitation, care of the sick, prison visitation, block Rosary and living Rosary crusade.
Africa
Benin
Cotonou Regia: During the past four months reports were taken from seven praesidia with an average of fourteen members each. In the course of home and hospital visitation contacts included Catholics, Protestants, animists and a large number of members of sects. Results included 90 Baptisms, 50 returns to Mass, 26 returns to the Sacraments and 134 new catechumens. Catechism is taught to many catechumens ? some of whom are invalids and are prepared for Baptism in their own homes. Affiliated Councils report similar works as well as contact with witch doctors, three of whom attend catechism classes and go to Mass, and three others have already been prepared for Baptism and First Holy Communion. Ouidah Curia has set up two new praesidia and all Councils are trying to increase the number of junior members.
Niger
Niamey Curia: Cotonou Regia (as caretaker of the Legion in Niger) is preparing to visit Niamey Curia, which is the only Council in this country.
Republic of the Congo
Brazzaville Regia: Efforts continue to try to raise the number of praesidia directly attached to the Regia. The main works of the praesidia are home and hospital visitation and crowd contact. Seminars are arranged for adult and junior members.
Togo
Lom Regia: Praesidia have an average of twenty members. In the course of home and hospital visitation, crowd contact and manning of book barrows, people of all denominations are met. The Rosary and family prayer are promoted and catechism classes are organised. 56 people were prepared for Baptism and 67 for First Holy Communion. Masses were arranged at Regia and Council levels for the Causes of Venerable Edel Quinn and the Servant of God, Frank Duff. Enclosed retreats, Congresses, recruiting, Exploration Dominicalis projects, were also organised by several Councils. Lom‚ Junior Curia has fourteen members who engage in home visitation, crowd contact, recruit auxiliary members and promote family prayer. 36 members took part in an enclosed retreat. Translation of Handbook into Ew‚ language is almost completed and an imprimatur will be sought soon.
Senegal
Lom‚ Regia as caretaker of the Legion in Senegal, reported that minutes from May to September showed that the three Curiae are doing a wide variety of works which include home and hospital visitation, contacting the sick, elderly and orphans, mainly Catholics and Muslims. They also teach catechism, prepare people for the Sacraments, bring children to Mass, and were successful in counselling an alcoholic boy and preventing and abortion. The Curia in Joal has sixteen praesidia and is organising a Congress. Pickane Curia has thirteen praesidia. Dakar Curia has thirteen praesidia and had a Congress in July. Pickane Curia joined in this first Congress, bringing attendance to 350.
Guinea Equatorial
Bata Comitium: Reports indicate that solid extension is being carried out. Some new praesidia were set up in the interior of the country. In Bata city there are 250 young people in the Legion. Two young students have gone to Malabo to study. A new Curia with seven praesidia was set up in Asok some distance from Bata.
Malabo Curia: The Legion is working well but has trouble with the Sects. Praesidia are being visited as usual.
Cameroun
Douala Senatus: Over 500 legionaries attended a meeting in Douala on 26 June 2004 with the Auxiliary Bishop D. Bogmis who was representing H.E. Cardinal Tumi. The Pro-Regia of Yaounde and the four Comitiae of Edea, Nkonsamba, Bafoussam and Kumba, which are directly attached to the Senatus, were represented at this meeting. A praesidium in Makepe visits a leprosy clinic in Dibamba.
Central America
Belize
The Curia is trying to revive a Spanish-speaking praesidium. One praesidium has a bereavement group attached, and during the summer holds religious classes for students. As a result of home visitation, a praesidium reported a family now attending Mass.
Guatemala
Guatemala City Comitium: The visit of Bernardo de Nardo (extension worker) is paying dividends. Extension has been renewed and is progressing. Cardinal Quezada Turuno was visited and gave his complete support to the Legion. He wants the Legion to be extended throughout Guatemala. Appointments have been made to meet the Bishops of Santa Rose de Lima and of Escuintla and arrangements have been made to visit a number of parishes to start praesidia there. The attached Korean Curia reported 27 Baptisms and seven atheists recruited as catechumens.
Comitium of Camot n: A recent report covers four adult praesidia and four senior and one junior Curiae. Two new praesidia and six junior praesidia were set up. Exploratio projects are undertaken by most praesidia. Young people are prepared for First Holy Communion and Confirmation, and parents for the Baptism of their children. Atendance at Sunday Mass has greatly increased.
Comitium of Jalapa: Reports of seven attached Curiae mention good visitation of homes and prisons, teaching catechism to children and pre-marriage counselling.
Costa Rica
Senatus of San Jos : This Council has ten Comitia, seventeen Curiae and twenty-one praesidia attached. Efforts are being made to develop junior legionaries.
Nicaragua
Regia of Managua: Home to home visitation is done. Co-habiting couples are prepared for Marriage. Prison visitation is done, evangelising those deprived of their liberty. Numbers attending Sunday Mass has increased. A praesidium has worked on extension in one parish since last February and has set up two adult praesidia which have already been affiliated to the Regia.
El Salvador: This report covers seven praesidia, 2 Curiae and 2 Regiae. A praesidium reported a man going to Confession after 58 years. People travelling distances to the Senatus meeting have to cross rivers in boats in some places. There were many returns to the Sacraments here and one youth?s suicide was prevented.
Honduras
Senatus of Tegucigalpa: Efforts are being made to strengthen the Senatus body.
Panama
Panama Comitium: The new English-speaking Curia in Col˘n was represented at the National Show of the Commission of the Laity in the Archdioceses. A couple living together for fifty years were married in Church.
Mexico
Mexico City Senatus: Among the principal apostolic works carried out were visitation of the sick and elderly in their homes and in hospitals including psychiatric hospitals. Legionaries prepare meals and pray and chat with the patients. In the course of home-to-home visitation legionaries have constant dialogue with separated brethren and lapsed Catholics which have resulted in conversions to the Catholic faith and many returns to the Sacraments.
Guadalajara Senatus: Three praesidia, two Comitia and one Curia reported recently. A Comitium reported 850 active members and 300 auxiliaries. There are many catechists among the legionaries and all age groups are prepared for the Sacraments. Jail visitation is carried out; prisoners are prepared for the Sacraments and legionaries are present when Mass is celebrated in the jail.
Merida Regia: During a three-month period five Comitia, three Curiae and five prasesidia reported; including eight junior Curiae. On home visitation legionaries read a little scripture, usually the gospel of the day and explain it. They get a very positive response to this approach. One of the Comitia which reported has 44 Curiae attached. Several returns to the practice of the faith were reported and children and adults were prepared for the Sacraments. Many young adult couples received the Sacrament of Marriage. Large number of separated brethren are met in the course of home visitation and about fifty returned to the Church.
Hermosillo Regia: Two praesidia, four Curiae and one Comitium reported. The legionaries are promoting the Year of the Eucharist. Six hundred homes were visited inviting the people to take part in Eucharistic Adoration. Efforts are made to prepare legionaries for officership.
Monterrey Regia: Two praesidia and 3 Curiae reported. A praesidium carried out an Exploratio Dominicalis project ? six half days over a two week period. A neglected area of the outskirts of the city was visited resulting in many interesting contacts and requests for the Sacraments. A lady reported a remarkable recovery through the intercession of Venerable Edel Quinn.
Asia
Thailand
The Senatus promotes the Sacrament of Marriage through home visitation and nineteen couples were recently married. Many graces are received through prison and hospital visitation. A Buddhist was given a Miraculous medal who later asked for a statue of Our Lady.
Myanimar (Burma)
The Senatus received three praesidia reports in October. They have memberships of five, nine and twenty-four and visit homes, hospitals and a home for the elderly. They help invalids of all religions. Evangelisation efforts resulted in four marriages, a Baptism of one adult and ten children. Five adults and thirty children received the Sacrament of Confirmation. The Enthronement of the Sacred Heart was arranged in twenty-two homes. Two praesidia conducted Rosary Crusades.
India
Chennai Senatus: A great deal of pastoral work is done including the visitation of homes and hospitals. Peace was restored in twenty-four families, involving seventy-one persons.
Ponticherry Senatus: Village evangelisation is carried out; the sick, orphans, lepers and handicapped are all visited. One Curia reported eighty-two non-Catholics brought into the Church. Comments and suggestions made by the Body on the reports presented show that it is a thinking body. Extension and growth is continuing. Translation of the Handbook into Tamil is being finalised.
Mumbai Regia: Reports from Councils and praesidia mentioned Rosary Crusades. All praesidia/Councils were requested to present their Audits. Street contact is undertaken as well as the visitation of homes, hospitals and institutions where the faith is discussed and the lapsed are encouraged to return to the Church. There is a huge apostolate to youth and the Regia gives a lot of care to their youth praesidia. Many are involved in extension and recruiting. During Lent, homes are visited and Stations of the Cross are conducted.
Kerala Senatus: In the course of evangelisation, Hindus, Muslims, prisoners and lepers are contacted. The Rosary is promoted and catechism is taught. Twenty-eight marriages were regularised and eighteen returned to the Sacraments. Numerous homes were consecrated to the Sacred Heart. One Comitium established thirteen praesidia and two new Curiae. True Devotion to the Nation projects involved the cleaning of wells and encouraging blood donations.
Calcutta Comitium: Two retreats attracted twenty-three and thirty-five persons. The Rosary is promoted and homes are consecrated to the Sacred Heart. Hindu and Muslim families are visited.
Pakistan
Karachi Curia: A praesidium of sixteen members carries on an active apostolate through home and hospital visitation and the teaching of catechism.
Sri Lanka
The Senatus reported the establishment of six new praesidia, the reception of twenty-six persons into the Church and the return of forty-six fishermen to the Church. Exploratio projects are undertaken. Three hundred and forty attended retreats. This area was badly affected by the Tsunami Tidal Wave. Prayers are requested.
Kazakhstan
One praesidium is working with twenty catechumens. Adults and children are instructed for reception of the Sacraments. The Regional Hospital including the cancer unit is visited. Auxiliary members are visited and prayed with.
Vietnam
In Hue Regia, which is attached to the Senatus and covers four Dioceses, there are 3084 senior and 555 junior legionaries. In one year 246 adults and 101 children were baptised, hundreds were brought to the Sacraments of Confession and the Eucharist, 573 received the Sacrament of Confirmation and 90 marriages were arranged.
Attendance of Council meetings of the officers
of directly attached praesidia
Concern was expressed about the low attendance at some Councils of the officers of directly attached praesidia. These praesidia form the core of the Council and a good attendance of their officers is vital for the life and vigour of the Council, which depends on their active participation in the proceedings at the monthly meetings and on their assistance with the management of the Council. Officers of directly attached praesidia need to be drawn more into the work of Council administration and to be reminded of the value of their regular attendance at meetings.
Overseas Visitors
Among the overseas visitors warmly welcomed to the Concilium were Rev. Msgr. F.G. Wearden, Spiritual Director of Houston Comitium, U.S.A., Holly McQuitty, President, Charlene McQuitty, Vice-president of Houston Regia and Rev. Fr. N. Harding, Spiritual Director of a Spanish-speaking Curia in the Regia area. All addressed the meeting and expressed their joy and being present. The Regia governs the Legion in three States viz Louisiana, Texas and New Mexico, which include twenty-six Dioceses, and extension is a priority for the Regia as well as Peregrinatio Pro Christo projects. Sile Ni Choch in, president of the Concilium thanked the visitors for coming and said a useful meeting had been held with them which gave the Concilium officers first hand information about the strength of the Regia and its plans for the future.
Causes for Canonisation
Legionaries in all parts of the world are requested to promote the Causes of the Servants of God, Frank Duff and Alfie Lambe and the Venerable Edel Quinn by distributing the prayers for these Causes to as many people as they meet on a daily basis, if possible.
