Burundi Jubilee
Enda Dunleavy, Secretary of the Concilium and Ciara Hayden of Presentata Curia, Dublin represented the Concilium at the Jubilee celebrations in Burundi. The following is a report on their work. We arrived at Bujumbura un Friday 20th August to see crowds on the airport balcony with a huge Legion banner. Fr. Venant Mpozako, Senatus Spiritual Director, the Senatus president, Sr. Dorothee, Mother General of the Militants of Our Lady and many others, made us feel verv welcome. That same day we were brought to the Bishop of Bujumbura. Mgr. Evariste Ngoyagoya, who received us kindly and told us that he was happy with the Legion which was attracting more and more youth to its ranks. Next morning he came to the Legion youth meeting organised specially for Ciara and after her talk, asked them if they would be prepared to answer any call he might make on them, even to go on projects to Tanzania or Uganda. We travelled the same day to Gitega which is in the centre of the country and the Christian heartland and the seat of the Senatus. There 50 years ago. Fr. Achille Denis, a White Father, set up the first praesidia.
We were accommodated in the Archbishop's residence along with Fr. Venant. The celebrations began that same evening with a procession to Our Lady's shrine with banners and Our Lady's statue all decorated with flowers. There was a concelebrated Mass with wonderful singing and religious dances. Next day, at the same location, there was a solemn Pontifical Mass at which the Archbishop preached to the several thousand legionaries who had assembled along with representatives of the other Catholic organisations. He said that the Holy Father wanted a renewed and a more profound evangelisation of the people. The Senatus had arranged translators to be at our side all the time and we were able to follow everything. Archbishop Ntamwana also expressed his joy with the faithful service of the Legion and the fact that the young people were now joining its ranks. After the Mass, there was a reception for the Archbishop and for the legionaries who had come long distances. Here too, young legigionaries sang and did recitations, all imbued with De Montfort`s True Devotion which is practised on a wide scale there. On Monday we attended the celebrations in the Central Prison where there is a Curia with 200 legionaries. Here too the organisation was perfect with translators on hand for us and legionaries relieving each other in militarv style with the banners and the pictures of Fr. Denis. Frank Duff and Edel Quinn, which were carried everwhere.
That evening, we travelled to Mugera in the mountains where the Seminary is located and where the first praesidia met. The Seminary has a Curia of its own. Next day, at the shrine of Our Lady of Mugera which is the national shrine of Our Lady, high up on a mountain, we had the final act of the Jubilee with concelebrated Mass, Legion prayers and heautiful hymns. At the end, the veterans, those who had been 50 years in the Legion were decorated and called to the microphone to tell stories of the early days. On Wednesday, we returned to Bujumbura where we had an audience with the new Nuncio. Mgr. Paul Gallagher, who was happy to hear us and blessed us before leaving.
