Brazil
Rio de Janeiro Senatus: Two members of the Senatus set up 3 Comitia during their visit to the Amazonian region. The Senatus was represented at a meeting in Belo Horizonte to organise a conference in Sao Paulo next year for junior legionaries from all the Brazilian Councils. Copacabana Comitium, with 5 attached Curiae, lists among its works the evangelisation of adults in State schools. Alcantra Comitium with 4 junior and 23 senior Curiae carries out a book barrow apostolate. They record the prevention of an assassination.
Belo Horizonte: Senatus 73 legionaries from the Senatus and 27 from other Councils took part in a joint Peregrinatio Pro Christo project making over 20,000 contacts and setting up 4 praesidia. The project concluded with Mass celebrated by His Excellency Bishop Diogo. In Varginha legionaries organised 6 Baptism courses. In another area an AIDS sufferer was dissuaded from attempting suicide.
Salvador Senatus: Junior legionaries teach the rosary to other children and they work with handicapped children and young cancer patients. A Comitium has over 1600 members of whom 500 are juniors.
Brasilia Regia: Efforts are being made to start a University praesidium. In the course of visitation of orphanages and creches legionaries seek out those who have not been prepared for the Sacraments. In Goiania about 6500 rosaries were recited in public squares, homes, hospitals and cemeteries.
Sao Luis Regia: Prison visitation, Bible study groups and visits to homes and hospitals are among works recorded.
Belem Regia: Most praesidia are engaged in catechesis and large numbers of children are prepared for the Sacraments.
Fortaleza Regia: Preparations are under way to raise three Curiae to Comitium status. Praesidia attached to a Curia in Maranguape, Ceará, prepared 159 children for First Holy Communion and 22 young people for Confirmation. They also prepared 31 families for the baptism of their children. A Curia in Tauá set up two junior praesidia. A Comitium in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, reported that 10 Exploratio Dominicalis projects had been carried out with very good results.
Sao Paulo Senatus: Legionaries from the Senatus were among more than 100,000 on the annual Legion pilgrimage to the Shrine of Our Lady of Aparecida. 80 young legionaries from the Senatus area attended a Conference organised by the Senatus. A praesidium directly attached to the Senatus gives great attention to the elderly in an apartment block, helping them to attend weekly Mass. The legionaries also help AIDS sufferers. Another praesidium gives spiritual assistance to hospital patients and their relatives and also helps people living on the streets. Legionaries in the Regia of Ponta Grossa carry out evangelisation among drug addicts and street girls. Legionaries in the Ourinhos Comitium contacted 300 people at the Bus Terminal.
Buenos Aires Senatus: Senatus Officers, and all Argentinian Councils, thank the Concilium for sending a visitor to them. Senatus minutes arrive promptly, usually about 10 days after the meeting. The Senatus President and Secretary attended a meeting of Corrientes Regia at which elections took place, all went perfectly. A Comitium runs a Sancta Maria Hostel and organises many food kitchens which, are not run directly by legionaries; one of these feeds 1500 children; a short catechism class and prayers are features of the food kitchens. Two of the married permanent deacons ordained recently in one Diocese are legionaries. Home to home visitation is given priority in the Senatus and weak praesidia are helped, usually by an Exploratio team.
Salta Senatus: A Curia recorded 22 conversions to the Catholic faith. Many non-practising are reconciled to the Church and they are invited to become active members to help them learn more about their Faith. Some prisoners are held in disused containers with bars at one end and live in appalling conditions. Legionaries visit them to look after their spiritual needs. Practical assistance of free legal aid is given and the help of other organisations is sought to alleviate the terrible conditions.
Corrientes Regia: Large numbers of legionaries came to meetings with the Concilium visitor. Many praesidia have a very large membership and junior and intermediate praesidia are excellent. A good spirit is obvious in spite of national financial problems. The Archbishop is very interested in the Legion and calls on them to carry out many works, including preparations for the Eucharistic Congress which is to be held there next year.
Rosario Regia: In May this year the Regia organised a public rosary to pray for world peace and to promote the year of the rosary. 800 attended. Praesidia reports record home and hospital visitation, pre-Baptism talks to families, visits with the Virgin Statue to homes and business premises and visits to AIDS patients.
Cordoba Senatus: A junior praesidium of 10 was set up. A special meeting of young people in the Dean Funes area was very successful.
ASIA
Korea
Seoul Senatus: 16,134 legionaries from the Seoul Senatus attended the Legion's Golden Jubilee celebrations in Kwangju on 8 May 2003. A book on the history of the Legion of Mary in Korea over the past 50 years has been compiled by the Senatus. Members from 27 Comitia attended a meeting organised by the Senatus for legionaries caring for junior praesidia. Inchon Regia recorded an increase of 13 junior praesidia over a 12 month period. 60,053 catechumens were recruited by legionaries in the Regia area. The Regia of Wonjoo Kangwon-do recorded 1,441 returns to the Sacraments. While Comitia reports generally show some decrease in both active and auxiliary membership, most of them still have several thousand members. All the Councils reporting have legionaries engaged in recruiting catechumens, helping with catechism classes, encouraging returns to the Sacraments, visiting the sick and a street mission campaign.
Gwangju (formerly Kwangju) Senatus: The Senatus organised the celebrations for the Golden Jubilee of the Legion of Mary in Korea on 8 May. The Archbishop of Gwangju was the chief celebrant at Mass in the FIFA World Cup Stadium, which had an attendance of up to 50,000. The Apostolic Nuncio to Korea along with several Bishops and about 200 priests concelebrated the Mass. A Comitium in Mokpo is expected to set up a second Curia in DaeSung Dong, where there are now 30 praesidia. The Senatus President Ludovic Kim, addressed the Concilium meeting in July during a visit to Dublin with a group of legionaries from the Senatus.
Daegu (formerly Taegu) Regia: The minutes mention that a junior Curia was established on 18 May to effectively manage the junior praesidia under various Councils in the Regia. A Conference of Comitium Officers was held 17 - 18 May at which there were good discussions about effective management of the Legion of Mary including management of the junior Legion bodies. Three junior praesidia were set up in one parish in a Comitium in Kimchon. Council reports show many catechumens recruited and many baptisms.
Japan
Osaka Senatus: Officers of Osaka and Nagasaki Regiae attended the February meeting. Tokyo Regia has one Comitium, 4 Curiae and 16 directly attached praesidia with a total membership of 371 active and 1,276 auxiliaries. Nagasaki Regia has one Comitium, 3 Curiae and 12 directly attached praesidia with a total membership of 209 active and 425 auxiliaries. Works being done in both Regiae include visitation of hospitals and of people who are away from the Church. Hanshin Curia attached to the Senatus, reported that a praesidium has been restarted in Shukugawa Church. This is the second praesidium to be restarted in this Curia in the past few months.
Hong Kong Comitium: Reports from Curiae recorded the teaching of catechism to young people, helping in Homes for the aged, prison visitation, consecration of families to the Sacred Heart and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, contact work at the Airport and helping sufferers of Autism and blind people. Other works included attendance at funeral services and contact with street sleepers.
Singapore Senatus: A Chinese Curia established in Sibu a year ago has since set up 4 new praesidia. A Filipino praesidium recruited 25 active and 77 auxiliary members on a recruiting drive and as a result set up a new praesidium. Extension and recruiting feature largely in reports.
Indonesia
Jakarta Senatus: Through their evangelising efforts, legionaries are in touch with the poor including street children. "Friendship Prayer" is organised for the sick in their homes. One non-Christian sick lady rejected by her family but cared for by legionaries received the Sacrament of Baptism a short time before her death. Her funeral was arranged by the legionaries. Praetorian membership features in all reports.
Taiwan Senatus: Among the works undertaken are home and hospital visitation, teaching Catechism and Christian Doctrine, bible study, visitation of non-Christians, rosary groups, and praying with the bereaved. Seventy adults and children were baptised. The Praetorian and Adjutorian degrees are promoted.
AFRICA
Kenya
Senatus of Kenya: His Grace, Archbishop Ndingi Mwana Nzeki was the chief celebrant and preached the homily at the Edel Quinn Anniversary Mass, which was very well attended. The support and interest of the Kenyan Hierarchy in the Legion is tremendous and the Senatus was present at the ordination of 3 new Bishops and presented each with a copy of the Handbook. The praesidium in Kenyatta University has 21 members and among their works is reading for blind students. A visitation of Councils in Tanzania was undertaken by the Senatus on behalf of Concilium and a report is awaited.
Uganda
Senatus of Uganda: Kabale Comitium has a membership of 13,343. Works include visitation of the lapsed and people of all creeds, visitation of prisons and teaching catechism and literacy. They plan to increase the youth involvement. Extension continues and 3 Comitia and numerous Curiae were set up in 2 months. Masaka Comitium has 17 praesidia, 8 Curiae and 2 other Comitia attached, with a membership of 2,660.
Malawi
Blantyre Regia: Membership continues to grow and regular reports are received from the directly attached praesidia and Councils in Blantyre Archdiocese, while good contact is maintained with the Legion in 4 other Dioceses in Malawi.
Nigeria
Benin City Regia: Warri Comitium held a rally to promote the Cause of Venerable Edel Quinn and established 16 praesidia during the year. Mater Redemtoris Curia recorded 350 Baptisms and First Holy Communions and 1,050 persons converted to Catholicism. Exploratio Dominicalis and week long projects were organised.
Enugu Regia: As a result of their work 969 lapsed returned to the Church, 1.064 converted to Catholicism and 69 Block Rosary Centres were established. 4 legionaries were ordained priests and 6 as Deacons.
Ikot Ekpene Regia: They reported 11 new senior and 1 new junior praesidia started.
Kaduna Regia: Efforts are ongoing to raise Abuja and Jos Comitia to Regia status. Kano Comitium reported 245 Muslims converted, 1,051 lapsed returned and 2,493 baptished. 2,245 attended a Mass for Venerable Edel Quinn.
Ibadan Regia: Approval has been received from the Archbishops of Ibadan and Lagos for the raising of Lagos Comitium to Regia status. Four Comitia with a total membership of 11,442 seniors and 7,927 juniors reported.
Zambia
Lusaka Regia: Home visitation is their main work and the following up of contacts with members of the Sects and the Reformed Church; 5 received instruction and became Catholics. Chelstone Comitium reported 12 attending catechumen lessons and Kitwe Comitium organised an Edel Quinn Memorial Mass. An extension visit to Ndola was very successful and one to Mongu Diocese is being arranged. Prior to their extension visits contact is made with the local Bishops.
Kasama Regia: Extension and visitation of Councils and praesidia is ongoing and a number of Comitia are planned and new correspondents have been appointed. St.Anne's Junior Curia has 250 members and they visit the sick, assist in the parish and recruit juniors. Some juniors walked 37 km for the Regia's Inauguration. The Mysteries of Light have been introduced throughout the Regia.
Tanzania
Dar-Es-Salaam Comitium: Mwenge Curia wishes to create a new Curia due to its vast size.
Njombe: Two praesidia have been started. Home and hospital visitation is carried out particularly to elderly people. The Rosary is promoted and 24 were baptised, 30 marriages were regularised and 77 lapsed returned to practice.
Sierra Leone: A letter in April said that Legion work is going on effectively in all but one of the praesidia in Freetown. A Congress was well attended.
Ethiopia
Jimma: A letter from the praesidium Spiritual Directress described their Acies ceremony at which 12 members made their annual consecration to Our Lady.
EUROPE
Austria and attached Councils
Comitium Hollabrunn and 3 Curiae in Vienna reported on the promotion of the True Devotion to Mary. Maria Roggendorf Youth Curia organised an extension weekend and 150 young people were contacted. Comitium Linz is undertaking extension to Salzburg and started a Croatian praesidium. 25 attended a youth weekend organised by Comitium Graz.
Hungary
Budapest Regia: 3 new Hungarian speaking Curiae were established. 120 legionaries and 6 priests attended a winter school and 3 summer camps for children were planned.
Romania
Buckarest Curia: 16 praesidia are attached. The translation of the Handbook into Romanian has been completed and the printing in hand.
Czech Republic
Prague Curia: has started a new praesidium. The Czech Handbook has received an imprimatur and can now be printed.
Croatia
Comitium Zagreb established a new Curia with 9 senior and 2 junior praesidia.
Latvia
Riga Comitium has 3 Curiae attached. Some priests within the Comitium area have been contacted in regard to starting praesidia. The youth praesidium in Riga has 4 members who contact young people for the youth Mass which is held once a month. Another praesidium with 7 members visit the hospital and help to prepare patients for Sunday Mass.
Lithuania
Kaunas Comitium: The first meeting of the new Comitium was held on the 4 August.
Poland
Lublin Regia: There are 13 Curiae attached with 1,573 active and 2,250 auxiliary members. The Regia is made up of 4 Comitia comprising 35 Curiae and 355 praesidia composed of 4,778 active and 14.772 auxiliary members. A Day of Recollection is held at least once monthly to promote the spiritual growth of all members. In the course of the year information meetings about the Legion of Mary were held in 27 parishes and new praesidia were founded. 250 people were baptised, 200 children received First Holy Communion and 50 people were confirmed.
Warsaw Comitium: The Comitium has a programme of spiritual formation. Mother of Divine Grace Curia reports door to door apostolate by new praesidia in Lasniew. Extension is ongoing in all Curiae and Gdansk is now being considered for extension thanks to a legionary of Barnet Curia in London.
Belarus
Minsk Comitium: The Comitium is diligent in its duty of extension and visitation of praesidia. A new Curia has been erected in Mozer with 3 senior and 2 junior praesidia attached. This brings to 3 the number of Curiae attached to the Comitium. There is now a total of 31 senior and 7 junior praesidia in the country. A junior praesidium in Minsk reports doing an apostolate among their peers, distributing Icons and sometimes bringing them to Mass and prayers in the Church. The seniors have visited 16 schools and have very good contacts with Orthodox in homes for the elderly. These are very happy to have a Catholic priest come to confess them.
Visitors to Concilium
Among the overseas visitors welcomed to the meeting were Rev. Frs. L. Noso, O.P. and P. Galli, O.P. from Croatia and a group of 8 legionaries from Munich Senatus, Germany who had attended a Summer School in Dublin. Andreas Huber president of the Senatus and leader of the group addressed the meeting. He gave details of the composition of the Senatus and spoke of their plans to interest youth and to prepare for World Youth Day 2005.
