Visit to Argentina
Noel Lynch, former Legion Envoy in Argentina spent 5 weeks visiting that country on behalf of the Concilium in June/July 2003. On his return he gave a most interesting and exhilarating report on his visit. He found that praesidia and Councils had grown enormously, that both young and old were active members and also that there was no class distinction in praesidia. He found numerous Junior Curiae in one province. Young legionaries willingly take on street contact work and they take part in Peregrinatio projects to Indian settlements where the only Christian presence is that of the Sects. Older members who find it difficult to climb stairs of high rise flats continue in membership by contacting street girls in the plazas at 11.00 p.m. Many legionaries are called on in their private capacities when emergencies arise in their areas. Legionaries have to make great sacrifices to attend Legion meetings because of poverty and the total breakdown of the financial system in the country. Noel was obviously greatly impressed by the devotional manner in which legionaries say the Legion prayers at meetings and also by their devotion to the Servant of God Alfie Lambe who served as Legion Envoy in South America and who died in Buenos Aires in 1959. Work done for his Cause in Buenos Aires is at an advanced stage. At a meeting arranged for Spiritual Directors, 30 priests were present and 6 of them said their vocations came from the Legion. Cardinals, Archbishops and priests agree that the Legion is the strongest association numerically in the country and if they want something done, they call first on the Legion of Mary.
Aileen O'Donoghue, Vice-president of the Concilium thanked Noel Lynch for undertaking the visit to Argentina and she also thanked his family for their co-operation in facilitating the visit.
Visit of Korean Legionaries
Ludovic Kim, president of Gwangju Senatus who led a group of 16 legionaries from his Senatus was warmly welcomed to the Concilium meeting. He paid a warm tribute to the Columban priests and Sisters who brought the Legion to Korea 50 years ago and he said the Golden Jubilee celebrations which took place last May with about 50,000 in attendance showed how the Legion had progressed since it rook root in Korea.
Aileen O'Donoghue thanked the Korean group for coming to the Concilium and she expressed her deep appreciation for their continued support and fidelity to the Legion.
The Legion of Mary Causes for Beatification/Canonisation
The Concilium is appealing to all Councils to promote the Causes of the Venerable Edel Quinn and the Servants of God, Frank Duff and Alfie Lambe by distributing as widely as possible the prayers for each of the Causes. The appeal is to mobilise legionaries to reach out to the non-legionary world by seeking prayers for the Beatification of each of the candidates. Through prayer will be created a ground swell of public opinion attesting to the extraordinary spirituality of the three candidates.
